.com, .net, .org domain names

The .com.au 2nd Level Domain (2LD) is for commercial purposes.

There are no rules or restrictions for registration of these generic Top Level Domains. If the name is available it may be registered to an individual or organisation. Trademark rules do, however, still apply.

.com.au domain names

1. To be eligible for a domain name in the .com.au 2LD, registrants must be:

  1. an Australian registered company; or
  2. trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory as well as having an ABN; or
  3. an Australian partnership or sole trader; or
  4. a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or
  5. an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
  6. an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
  7. an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
  8. an Australian commercial statutory body.

2. Domain names in the .com.au 2LD must:

  1. exactly match:
  1. the registrant's company, business, trading, association or statutory body name; or
  2. the words comprising the registrant's Australian Registered Trade Mark or application for an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or
  1. be an acronym or abbreviation of 2.a.i. or 2.a.ii. above; or
  2. be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant, because the domain name refers to
  1. a product that the registrant manufactures or sells; or
  2. a service that the registrant provides; or
  3. an event that the registrant organises or sponsors; or
  4. an activity that the registrant facilitates, teaches or trains; or
  5. a venue that the registrant operates; or
  6. a profession that the registrant's employees practice

.net.au domain names

1. To be eligible for a domain name in the .net.au 2LD, registrants must be:

  1. an Australian registered company; or
  2. trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory as well as having an ABN; or

.org.au domain names

The .org.au 2LD is for non-commercial organisations.

1. To be eligible in the .org.au 2LD, registrants must be:

  1. a charity operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant? constitution or other documents of incorporation; or
  2. a non-profit organisation operating in Australia, as defined in the registrant's constitution or other documents of incorporation.

2. Domain names in the org.au 2LD must:

  1. exactly match the name of the registrant's charity or non-profit organisation; or
  2. be an acronym or abbreviation of the name of the registrant's charity or non-profit organisation; or
  3. be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant, because the domain name refers to:
  1. a service that the registrant provides; or
  2. a program that the registrant administers; or
  3. an event that the registrant organises or sponsors; or
  4. an activity that the registrant facilitates, teaches or trains; or
  5. a venue that the registrant operates; or
  6. a profession that the registrant's members practice.

.id.au domain names

The .id.au 2LD is for individuals.

1. To be eligible for a domain name in the .id.au 2LD, registrants must be:

  1. an Australian citizen; or
  2. an Australian resident.

2. Domain names in the .id.au 2LD must:

  1. exactly match the registrant's personal name; or
  2. be an acronym or abbreviation of the registrant's personal name; or
  3. be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant, because the domain name:
  1. is derived from one or more words of the registrant's personal name; or
  2. includes one or more words of the registrant's personal name.

.asn.au domain names

The .asn.au 2LD is for associations.

1. To be eligible for a domain name in the .asn.au 2LD, registrants must be:

  1. an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or
  2. a political party registered with the Australian Electoral Commission; or
  3. a trade union or other organisation registered under the Workplace Relations Act 1996; or
  4. a sporting or special interest club operating in Australia.

2. Domain names in the asn.au 2LD must:

  1. exactly match the name of the registrant's association, political party, trade union or other industry body, or club; or
  2. be an acronym or abbreviation of the name of the registrant's association, political party, trade union or other industry body, or club; or
  3. be otherwise closely and substantially connected to the registrant, because the domain name refers to:
  1. a service that the registrant provides; or
  2. a program that the registrant administers; or
  3. an event that the registrant organises or sponsors; or
  4. an activity that the registrant facilitates, teaches or trains; or
  5. a venue that the registrant operates; or
  6. a profession that the registrant's members practice.

.co.uk, .co.nz domain names

There are no rules or restrictions for registration of these generic Top Level Domains. If the name is available it may be registered immediately to an individual or to an organisation. Trademark rules do, however, still apply.
